CAD symptoms, daily impacts recorded in new patient assessment

Researchers have developed a new patient-reported outcome questionnaire to assess symptoms and the impacts to daily life associated with cold agglutinin disease (CAD). Called the CAD-Symptoms and Impact Questionnaire (CAD-SIQ), it was developed by analyzing responses from patient interviews. Reactions to cold environments and fatigue were the most commonly…

No gains in transfusion efficacy with C1-INH treatment for CAD

A treatment to reduce the activation of the immune complement system didn’t increase the effectiveness of red blood cell transfusions in people with severe cold agglutinin disease (CAD) and other complement-mediated autoimmune hemolytic anemia (CM-AIHA). That’s according to a small, proof-of-concept Phase 2 clinical trial (EudraCT2012-003710-13) that found…

Healthy Pregnancy With AIHA Is Possible But Carries Risks: Study

Fetal complications are about four times more common in pregnant women with autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA), including cold agglutinin disease (CAD), than in those without the autoimmune condition, according to a small study. Still, maternal complications occurred at similar rates, and most were directly linked to AIHA relapses, or…

Subclinical CAD Identified In 2 Patients With COVID-19

Patients who develop cold agglutinin antibodies after COVID-19 infection won’t always show overt signs of cold agglutinin disease (CAD), a case report suggested. Two patients with COVID-19 at a clinic in Japan had high levels of the antibodies, but didn’t show signs of red blood cell destruction (hemolytic anemia)…

Blood Cancer Unexpectedly Triggers CAD in Patient

A man’s cold agglutinin disease (CAD) was caused by a type of blood cancer called B-lymphoblastic leukemia, according to a recent case report. While cancer is a known cause of CAD, this type of cancer was unexpected, the researchers noted, adding that a full work-up is needed to ensure…
